Cabinet of Stitched Curiosities: Create 3D Embroidered Insects

Take your embroidery off the hoop and into the third dimension!

In this two-session workshop, you'll create a beautifully detailed embroidered insect while exploring the techniques that showcase dimensional embroidery. Choose a moth or butterfly and then transform thread and stitches into a one-of-a-kind stitched specimen.

In Session 1, you'll explore embroidery stitches, practice techniques, and learn how to trace and fill the shapes that will become your insect. Then in Session 2, we'll add another dimension! You'll learn how to create wire slips—embroidered shapes worked around a wire framework—which allow wings, petals, leaves, and other elements to be shaped and lifted away from the surface. Finally, you'll assemble your insect and give it its wings.

New to embroidery? You're welcome here! Already comfortable with a needle and thread? You're welcome, too. Techniques and stitching will be tailored to each participant's experience level, making this a great introduction to dimensional embroidery or a chance for more experienced stitchers to add a new skill to their toolbox.

You'll learn:

  • A variety of embroidery stitches and techniques

  • How to trace and fill embroidered shapes

  • The basics of creating wire slips for 3D embroidery

  • How to construct and assemble dimensional embroidered elements

  • Techniques you can use beyond bugs to create petals, leaves, wings, and more

You'll leave with your own dimensional embroidered moth or butterfly—and a whole new way to think about what embroidery can do.
