Shoreline: A Modern Fabric Mosiac Wall Hanging
Inspired by afternoons spent down the shore, transform your favorite fabric scraps into a modern textile mosaic wall hanging full of color, texture, and movement.
In this relaxing, creativity-first workshop, you'll learn the art of raw-edge appliqué as you cut, arrange, and stitch organic fabric shapes to create a one-of-a-kind wall hanging. We'll explore color placement, composition, and layering to build a piece that feels balanced, expressive, and uniquely yours.
Whether you're drawn to the cool blues of the ocean, warm sunset hues, earthy forest tones, or a palette all your own, Shoreline is about letting your fabrics tell the story. There are no templates to follow and no two projects will ever look alike.
This class is perfect for folks looking for a fresh way to use treasured scraps while slowing down and enjoying the creative process.
You'll learn:
- Raw-edge appliqué techniques
- How to create organic, freeform shapes
- Tips for building a cohesive color palette
- Designing with movement and negative space
- How to use double-sided fusible interfacing
- Simple free-motion quilt-as-you-go to add texture and secure your appliqué
Finished project: An approximately 22”×25” modern fabric mosaic wall hanging.
Supplies:
- 3/4 - 1yd of background fabric (choose a light solid or fabric that reads as a solid) Cut to no larger than 22" X 25"
- 1 yard heat & bond lite
- Assorted scraps between 2.5” square and 5” square in beach stone colors (We like blues, greens, beige, tan, pinks, teals; metallics are fun too. Don’t be afraid of prints!)
- Paper scissors
- A pencil
- Thread in a neutral or contrasting color to your scraps - this could be a fun chance to use that variegated spool you’ve been eyeing
- Batting piece 2-3” larger than your background fabric
- Backing fabric 2 - 3” larger than your background fabric
- Spray baste or 6-10 large basting/safety pins
- Quilting gloves (optional)
You are welcome to use a shop sewing machine. If you bring your own, you must know how to attach your free-motion foot and lower your feed dogs. We reserve the right to move you to a shop machine if you are unable to sew on your machine.

| Skill Details: | This class is for all skill levels however, you should be comfortable using a sewing machine. At minimum, you should be able to thread the needle and wind a bobbin. |

| Instructor Bio: | Stella has been quilting for more than 20 years and enabling—we mean inspiring—other quilters ever since. She has a knack for putting together unexpected colors and fabrics and is always adding a new technique (or three) to her quilting toolbox. Her quilts can be spotted hanging throughout Needles & Bolts, where she fulfilled the very reasonable dream of opening a shop so she could spend her days surrounded by beautiful fabric and convince other people they definitely need more of it, too. An active member of the modern quilting community, Stella loves helping quilters build their skills, try something new, and discover that the thing that looked way too complicated is actually totally doable. |
