Sew It Yourself: Essential Mending Skills
Do buttons, hems, or zippers have you stumped? Need to patch up a hole in your favorite sweater? Join us to learn all the sewing basics that are sadly no longer taught in most schools! This class covers key mending skills—like sewing on buttons, hemming pants, mending holes, repairing zippers, and more—that will give you the confidence to tackle your own repairs.
Note: This is a skills workshop, not a full alterations service. We’ll do our best to get through as many projects as possible, but you’ll leave with the know-how to complete anything we can’t cover in class!
Things to bring or buy:
- Bring your mending projects, or practice on ours!

Additional Information
Parking:- Free street parking is available on Germantown Avenue, Carpenter Lane, Meehan Street, and surrounding side streets. Please note that even if parking is free, an enforced time limit may exist. You may need to walk a bit to get to the shop, please plan accordingly.
- The SEPTA 23 bus, which leaves Market Street Station in Center City and heads towards Chestnut Hill, stops directly in front of Needles & Bolts.

| Instructor Bio: | Beth is an accomplished seamstress, who has taught sewing classes for Mt. Airy Learning Tree. She currently works at the Philadelphia Art Museum and has been doing reproduction sewing & upholstery there since 2005. A patent instructor, she loves walking sewists through the magic of garment construction to help them build their own handmade wardrobes. |
