Quilting 101

Join us for an introduction to quilting workshop!
In this 2-session intensive, you'll create a lap quilt (40" x 56") and learn the basics of quilt construction from choosing fabrics to cutting using a rotary cutter, quilter's ruler and mat. You'll learn to piece a quilt top, sandwich and straight-line quilt your quilt and finish it with binding. We'll even discuss labeling your quilt to officially "sign" your work!

Session 1: Quilting supplies, fabric selection & prep + fabric cutting || Assembling blocks & rows + sewing the quilt top
Session 2: Basting the quilt & straight-line quilting, squaring up the quilt || Binding + making a label

By the end of the workshop, you'll have a cozy lap quilt to enjoy for many years!

Please arrive 15 minutes early to browse the fabric selection in shop. We'll discuss color theory, pattern, value, in class and you'll have time to shop during the first session. Anything purchased during class time will receive a 10% discount!

Skill Level: Beginner
Skill Details: Must have a working knowledge of a sewing machine. If you would like to take this class but need a sewing machine workshop, ask us about our Make Friends with Your Machine class prior to taking this class.
Materials Included: Pattern is included along with white, black, or cream colored thread. We have classroom machines to use but if you would like to BYO machine, feel free - don't forget the plug and pedal!
Requirements: Required: For the quilt top: Fabric 1: 1/2 yard || Fabric 2: 1/2 yard, || Fabric 3: 3/4 yard || Border: 3/4 yard || Backing: 1&3/4 yards || Batting: Baby size || basting safety pins || matching or contrasting thread for straight-line quilting
Instructor: Sydney Camisa Deas
Instructor Bio: Sydney is a nonprofit professional who resides in Mt. Airy with her husband, Rollin, and their two cats, Frosty & Babette. She has been sewing since elementary school and comes from a long line of stitchers. She previously taught sewing classes to middle school students through an after-school program in Burlington, Vermont. She loves sharing her love of sewing and fabric with others! Price includes pattern and an Intro to Quilting booklet. A 10% discount is offered on class supplies purchased in the shop.
