Join us for an introduction to quilting workshop! We'll spend four sessions creating a lap quilt (40" x 56") to learn the basics of quilt construction Week 1: Quilting supplies, fabric selection & prep + fabric cutting || Week 2: Assembling blocks & rows, creating the binding || Week 3: Basting the quilt & straight-line quilting || Week 4: Squaring up the quilt & binding + making a label || By the end of the workshop you'll have a cozy lap quilt to enjoy for many years! This workshop may have some homework between sessions.

Make your own gorgeous Japanese-Style Crossback Apron using classic linen , durable canvas or printed quilting cotton for your own unique look. In this workshop, you will learn basic garment construction and simple sizing techniques. This is considered a beginner garment class and can be taken as a prerequisite for our more advanced garment courses.

Do you have a serger and are afraid of how to thread it? Want a refresher on serger basics? This is the class for you! Taught by a serger expert, you'll spend two sessions getting to know your serger and what a great tool it is for your sewing projects. In session 1, you'll learn how all the dials, buttons, and levers work and how to thread the machine. Using a basic 4-thread stitch we will make a pillowcase. In session 2, you'll create a sampler of all the different stitches your serger can create. Both sessions are required for course completion

Feel more confident with your serger by sewing up the Linden Sweatshirt by Closet Core! Techniques involved include sewing with knits, straight seams, and attaching ribbing.

In this private 1 hour, one-on-one session, we'll get you up and running and ready to sew on your machine! You'll learn how to thread your machine, wind a bobbin, change a needle, start and stop stitching, and if there is time, make a stitch guide of all your machine stitches. Your instructor will help you understand the knobs and buttons to get you comfortable sewing on your own. All materials will be provided. Please bring your working machine - don't forget the plug, pedal, and user guide! Please note: if your machine has been sitting, unused for a long period of time, we may recommend your machine be serviced at a local reputable sewing machine service center before taking the workshop.

Join us every 1st and 3rd Wednesday evening for an Open Sew. Bring a hand-stitching project, your knitting, a machine sewing project, or just come chat and be inspired by other stitchers. We will have 4 machines to use on a first-come-first-served basis. Please indicate in the notes if you plan to machine sew or hand sew. Space must be reserved and there is a limit of 10 sewists.

Save the date: Tuesday, April 25 for a field trip with Needles & Bolts to the Garment District in NYC! We'll depart on Amtrak from 30th Street Station around 9a and arrive at Penn Station NYC around 11a We'll grab lunch and visit many of the Garment District's best fabric and notions shops like Mood, M&J Trimmings, and B&J fabrics. We'll even make a stop at Gotham Quilts! Join us for a fun day in the city surrounded by fabric! We'll head back to Philly around 5:30p and be back at 30th Street Station before 7p Once you reserve your spot we will email you the exact trains to book. ***Note: the earlier you purchase your Amtrak tickets, the less expensive they will be. As of 1/13, they are currently $19 each way.*** Registration is non-refundable/non-transferable. We are not responsible for any train delays or cancellations.

In the first of our capsule wardrobe workshops, we'll start with the Scout Tee from Grainline Studio- an easy tee shirt for beginning garment makers. Over four 3-hour sessions, you'll take your measurements, make a muslin toile, and stitch up a classic tee that you can sew over and over to start your basic capsule wardrobe. Stitch it in linen, cotton, or poplin for a fresh take on a classic. All materials are available in the shop at a 10% discount.

Class Policies

COVID-19 Policies + Protocols For In-Person Classes:

As of September 27, 2022

The city of Philadelphia no longer requires the use of masks indoors, however, masks are still strongly recommended in indoor public settings to help reduce transmission and keep Philadelphia at a low-risk level.

  • Proof of vaccination is not required to attend in-person classes and events.
  • Please sanitize your hands upon entry. Hand sanitizer is available at the door.
  • Practice social distancing.
  • Classes are limited to no more than 7 people, including the instructor.
  • Students will be provided their own set of tools unless indicated which are sanitized between every class session.

Attendance Agreements:

  • You acknowledge that crafting often involves the use of electrical equipment, irons, and sewing machines, as well as needles, scissors, and rotary cutters and that the use of these tools includes risks that can lead to injury. You agree to release and hold harmless Needles & Bolts, LLC its instructors, and employees from any and all claims and liability related to any accident that may arise as a result of your or your child's participation in classes, workshops, or programs. You agree to first aid and/or medical treatment, should the need arise.
  • Each person who is planning to attend a class must purchase a seat.
  • Please be on time. We cannot accept students after 15 minutes before the start time of class. If you are later than 15 minutes and are not allowed into class, we cannot offer you a store credit or refund for the missed class.

Cancellations + Rescheduling:

  • All classes need a minimum of 2 students to run (except the "Make Friends" series). If a class has less than 2 students 24 hours prior to class start, we will contact you and discuss moving your seat into the next available workshop or offer you a credit of the class amount paid to put towards a future class.
  • We require a 48-hour notice before the start of your class in order to receive a refund or store credit. Please note that we cannot offer a refund OR store credit if you are within the 48-hour time frame. If you need to cancel a class or switch the date and the 48-hour deadline has not passed, please email us at to do so and we are happy to help.
  • There are NO refunds or store credit given at any time for classes with out-of-town instructors and special guest instructors. Your seat may be transferred to a friend if you cannot attend.
